In February 2001, Franz Bartolomey, principal cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded Johannes Brahms' famous First Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 38 in E minor, and an early work, Richard Strauss' Sonata in F major, in the Grand Broadcasting Hall of the RadioKulturhaus. Twenty-five years later, two years after his father's death, his son, cellist Matthias Bartolomey, together with pianist Ariane Haering, now presents the album ‘HOMMAGE’ with the same programme, supplemented by an arrangement of Schubert's Moment Musical, Op. 3.
No Borders
Matthias Bartolomey is one of the most versatile and extraordinary cellists of our time.
He received his first cello lessons from his father, Franz Bartolomey. He studied with Valentin Erben and Clemens Hagen at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, where he has been a professor himself since 2020.
On the one hand, he has been playing as principal cellist with the early music ensemble Concentus Musicus Wien, founded by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, since 2010, and on the other hand, he founded the duo BartolomeyBittmann — progressive strings with violinist and mandola player Klemens Bittmann in 2012.
His chamber music partners include Benjamin Schmid, Linus Roth, Helmut Deutsch, Ariane Haering, Silke Avenhaus, Magda Amara, Matthias Schorn and Clemens Zeilinger.
Since 2017, Matthias has also been increasingly active as a composer, focusing on expanding the cello repertoire and the associated development of progressive playing techniques. In his teaching activities, Matthias Bartolomey always combines his diverse chamber music and solo experience with new, progressive and intuitively creative playing techniques with a special focus on groove and rock elements.
Matthias Bartolomey plays a violoncello by David Tecchler (Rome 1727) and its detailed replica by Philipp Bonhoeffer (Montecastelli (2021). He is an exclusive endorsement artist for LARSEN STRINGS Denmark.
