Vienna Boys Choir

The Vienna Boys Choir is one of the oldest and best-known choirs in the world, with roots dating back to 1296 and officially founded in 1498 by Maximilian I. Over the centuries, prominent composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert were associated with the choir.

Today, it forms part of a modern campus comprising several children’s and youth choirs as well as schools. Around 330 children and young people receive musical training there, which is recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The 98 choirboys perform worldwide and give around 300 concerts each year.

In addition to their concert activities, they are involved in social initiatives, including projects such as ‘superar’ and ‘Music for Hope’, which give children worldwide access to music.

"Voices" - About the album

Every voice is unique, an acoustic fingerprint of the individual’s personality. The Vienna Boys Choir is committed to giving every child their very own voice – the sound that corresponds to their nature. Only when every voice can express itself vocally in this way and contribute to the choral sound is the goal achieved. The basis for this is individual voice training, which promotes ‘bel canto’ singing with the correct support.

What makes boys’ voices so special is their fragility: the awareness of their transience resonates in every note – a reflection of human life. Over the last 15 years, the Vienna Boys Choir has collected special recordings, which are now brought together in this anthology. The songs have been selected to perfectly match the character and voice of each boy.

The musical journey takes the audience through sacred and secular works, solo and ensemble pieces, and culminates in a collective sound.
