With her new album ‘Maddalena in Wonderland’, the exceptional gamba player Maddalena Del Gobbo invites listeners on a musical journey into fantastical worlds of sound – inspired by Lewis Carroll's famous classic Alice in Wonderland.
Like Alice, Del Gobbo follows an inner calling, diving down the ‘rabbit hole’ of her imagination and discovering a world of baroque elegance, romantic depth and contemporary colourfulness. The focus is not only on musical adventures, but also on a personal exploration of identity, emotion and transformation.
The programme brings together works by Tobias Hume, Telemann, Forqueray, Marin Marais, Sainte-Colombe, Carl Friedrich Abel and John Dowland – supplemented by her own arrangements and a world premiere recording: Suite du thé, dedicated to her by Spanish composer Arti Sarró. As a special personal statement, the album closes with two romantic pieces for cello and piano – a tribute to Del Gobbo's father and a return to her musical roots.
Maddalena im Wunderland is not just an album, but an emotional experience – somewhere between melancholy, confusion and hope. It tells of the power of music to carry us through confusing times and ultimately lead us to a light that leaves us changed.
The album features high-profile guests such as countertenor Alois Mühlbacher, pianists Artem Yasynskyy and Luca Quintavalle, and Slovakian photographer Michaela Ďurišová, whose fairy-tale imagery accompanies the album visually.
‘Hope is a central theme of this album – and I think we all need more of it,’ says Maddalena Del Gobbo.
